Newport Cupolas

From the 8th century in Islamic countries until now, throughout the world, cupolas have appeared on all types of buildings and structures. These rooftop ornaments serve both functional and ornamental uses although, today in the United States, cupolas are primarily used in decorative applications.

The Newport cupola, while visually resembling the Presidential, Governor, Hampton and other domes, first appeared in and around the city of Newport, Rhode Island during post-revolutionary times. One distinguishing feature of the Newport cupola is the longer height of its center or middle section. Also, this dome has louvers in the center, whether functional (for ventilation) or not.

The Newport cupola is quite aesthetically pleasing and fits right in with structures built in the colonial style. Newport cupolas, while added to or included on homes, also are attached to garages, stables, barns and other out buildings. While this rooftop decoration is frequently constructed completely of wood, it may also support a fiberglass or vinyl protective covering and/or an attractive copper roof.
